Life Letters.
Weekly words on building a life you don’t need to escape from.
Written on a plane coming back from Melbourne.
This week I've been thinking about “playing it small” and how relative that concept is, because…
I'm still playing it small.
What's “playing it small“ exactly?
Something like not being, doing, or living how you know you could be in the way you know you want to.
It may require new challenges, identity change, and more “risk” but you know it's the requisite to get into where you want to end up.
You don't realise that you're “playing it small” once in your life and then break through that barrier and live in perpetual “playing it big” land. Not at all.
When the next ceiling of your perceived abilities or your environment is holding you back or you're really comfortable, that's where you again decide on what scale you'd like to play life at.
This January I've been really comfortable. Sparing some detail, taking this short trip out of Perth (the most isolated city in the world and also my home town) to Melbourne and the Gold Coast has shown me just where I could be, how I could live and who I could be around.
Sure, it's daunting to take any risk to leave home or post online or start a business.
But from experience, those moments where you choose to dip your toe into a deep ocean of possibility, without quite knowing what will happen, is exactly where life becomes deeper and richer.
So where are you comfortable right now?
Where might you be playing it small and how might you be able to press up on the ceiling you've set yourself?
Because it might just be a latch you need to open to go to your next level,
and what an exciting thought that is.
See you on the road, in an airport or on a call [here],
Sam.
